The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is South Africa’s main regulatory authority responsible for the registration, regulation, and compliance of business entities and intellectual property rights. Its mandate covers companies, close corporations, co-operatives, and intellectual property such as trademarks, patents, designs, and copyright.

As an entity of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), the CIPC derives its mandate from the Companies Act, 2008. The Commission promotes legislative compliance, supports good corporate governance, and helps create a business-friendly environment in South Africa.

The CIPC facilitates company and IP registrations, monitors statutory compliance, administers annual returns and beneficial ownership disclosures, regulates business rescue practitioners, and maintains accurate and reliable business registers. Using digital platforms such as BizPortal and e-Services, the Commission provides efficient, transparent, and accessible services to the public.
